An unfortunate accident

The link above is to an article about a man from Oregon. He was not feeling well, so he told his wife he was driving to the hospital. Unfortunately, he had a heart attack in the parking lot by the emergency room and crashed his car. Eventually police came and administered CPR. Some officers went inside the ER to notify them of the accident and to send help. The ER staff told police to call 911 for an ambulance. Police officers continued CPR until an ambulance came. The man died less than an hour after the time police began CPR. The man was 125 feet from the entrance of the emergency room. Somewhere along the way there was a communication mishap. This mishap may have cost the man's life. I personally cannot believe it took so long for the man to get the help he needed when he was on hospital property. Maybe the police were unclear about the accident scene, or the hospital actually has some policy about calling for an ambulance, or maybe it is the man's fault for neglecting to call 911 when he was at his own house. The man may not have known to call 911 because he may not have spoken English since his wife does not speak English. Who was in the wrong; the police, the hospital, or the man? What do you think about this article?

  2. I think the hospital is wrong, and the police for one the hospital not instantly bringing out a stretcher and the police not carrying the man inside after they waited for about 10 minutes. Communication mishap or not, a man on hospital grounds deserves help if he is in a tragic situation.

  3. Wow, that is so sad that the man died and he was on the hospital property. I can not imagine the conversation someone had to have with his wife to explain even though he was 125 feet away he still died..How sad :(

  4. There was no reason to call an ambulance he was right in the parking lot. If I was an officer I would have just taken a stretcher to the parking lot and screamed emergency as soon as I passed through the doors. It wasted time for an ambulance to show up... if they did not do that the man would still be alive today.

  5. Unbelieveable what protocol there is for different places. It cost a man his life and also gave the hospital a very bad image. It will need lots of PR to make me want to go there. It sounds as if there was a lot of frustration from the police also and rightly so. I'm sure some lawyer has contacted the family and a lawsuit has started.

  6. I think that the hospital and the police were at fault for this poor man's death. The police should not have waited for an ambulance when the man was already in the hospital parking lot. The hospital should not have told the police to call for an ambulance, they should have immediately sent someone out with a stretcher. I feel bad for whoever had to explain the death of the man to his wife because his death should have been prevented.
